I made this card for the MFT sketch challenge #471. I was really strugling with the sketch. I must admit that I’m wasn’t completely happy with my idea before I started making the card. So it’snot a surprice that I’m not really happy with how it turned out either.
I stamped the princess and the butterflies first and masked them. Then I masked of a rectangle and used a stencil to create the background with distress oxide inks. I haven’t used my oxide inks for a while and the combination of Worn Lipstick and Seedless Preserve is also new to me. I wasn’t carefull when I masked of the rectangle – I thought I could eyeball it – but it turned out a bit wonky. So in an attempt to hide it I added some handdrawn stitched lines as a frame.
The princess and butterflies I colored with polychromos. I used a purple that matches the background and added orange details, since orange/yellow is the complementary color to purple.
My design didn’t leave a lot of room for a sentiment. My first idea was to add the sentiment on a strip of vellum, but I couldn’t find the right spot for it (and then I smeared the ink on the vellum, sigh). So instead I stamped the sentiment directly on the background. It gets a little lost in all the colors but I dont think it is a huge deal.
